Setting Up a Garage Work Table the Right Way
You might think that setting up a garage work table is pretty easy and simple. I really can"t blame for thinking along these lines because how complicated could it be? You"re looking at a table, you"re looking at a space around the table, and you"re looking at the things you"re going to do with that table. Given all of these considerations, it would seem like it"s a pretty straightforward situation.
Well, think again. There"s actually a lot of thinking needed in the process of looking for the right type of table for your garage. You have to understand that there are many different types of garage work tables on the market. This huge diversity of table types didn"t come out of nowhere. It exists for a reason. The obvious explanation, of course, is that different people need different table configurations, sizes and capabilities to fit their own particular set of needs.
Complicating matters further is the fact that people"s needs do change over time. You might be working primarily with wood or small plumbing projects around the house for the first year, but after you"ve owned your garage table for several years, you might notice that a lot of the stuff that you"re working on involves metal piping, grilles, and other items that require a tremendous amount of stability. Alternatively, you might also focus on electronics. This is why it"s really important to look at your choice of product with two mindsets.
First, you need to look at your short term needs. This is the easiest part because this is the part that you"re most conscious of. You know what you need right here, right now. There"s no mystery to it. You know your present set of circumstances, you know what you will be doing at least one year forward.
Things get a little bit murky and confusing when we start projecting past the two year mark. What exactly will you be needing a table by then? Maybe a lot of the stuff that you"re assembling now is already taken care of. Maybe a lot of the needs that you have in mind right now are already handled. It really would be a shame to blow $200, $300 or even $400 on a piece of equipment that you probably would not need after a relatively short period of time.
Let"s face it, 2 years or even 3 years out is a relatively short period of time. This is why it"s really important to look at the different types of work tables out there that you can put in your garage. Look at them in context. Look at them based on their predictable uses and see how many of these types of bench alternatives fit your needs, not just now, but also for the long term.
Mobile Folding Work Bench
This type of work bench is primarily needed by people who tend to move from Point A to Point B. Usually, people who require a lot of mobility provides services to other people. Keep this in mind because while this might seem like a good choice, it might not be all that practical because you do give up quite a bit of durability and rigidity for mobility.
Generic Garage Work Bench
A generic garage work bench is precisely that. It"s generic. It"s designed to work in all types of circumstances.
Now, that"s a little bit of a stretch because there is no such product that would perform best in all situations. Instead, it is adapted for most situations and the performance that you would get is fairly middle of the road. It"s not the best option for specialized work, but you already know that coming in. You give up quite a bit of top notch performance for its versatility.
A workshop bench is all about professional services. If you are engaged in any sort of professional work from your garage, this is the type of bench for you. How would you know? Well, if you need highly specialized equipment, and I"m not talking about generic equipment that you can use for a wide variety of jobs, but highly specialized and oftentimes expensive equipment to tackle a particularly narrow range of tasks, then you might want to take a long, hard look at a workshop bench.
This specialized type of workbench requires careful analysis. Make sure that you are going to be doing work that requires this type of bench. You don"t want to blow a few hundred dollars on a bench that you probably wouldn"t need in a short period of time.
Heavy Duty Workbench
If you"re doing a lot of heavy machining, heavy processing or you require a lot of space, you might want to consider a heavy duty workbench. The great thing about these benches is that they can take quite a bit of punishment. They are durable not only by design, but also by material. In other words, the materials that these benches are made of, as well as the way they"re put together, stand head and shoulders above the generic garage workbench model that you would find on the market. Of course, you would have to pay a premium for its ability to withstand the test of time.
Basic Workshop Workbench
If you"re not looking for a fancy setup and you are doing basically generic work and you"re just shifting different materials, then this might be the best solution for you. Not only is it cheaper, but it"s also relatively temporary. This way, you can use it as a cheap alternative until you figure out what you really need a workbench for, and then you can buy something more specialized in the future. If anything, it buys you time.
Adjustable Workbench Setup
An adjustable workbench is fairly easy to set up and it"s really a great temporary or stopgap solution. It"s kind of like a basic workshop workbench. If you"re just trying to feel your way around as to what you would exactly do most of the time in your garage, this is the best place to start.
Now, keep in mind that this is just a starting option. If you"re looking to do a wide range of heavy duty and highly specialized work in your garage, it may be a good time to sell this unit and step up to something more specialized and more tailored to the range of work you would be handling.
Stainless Steel Workbench
Just by the looks of this unit, you can tell that it means business. It can take a beating and it can withstand the test of time. The great thing about stainless steel is, obviously, it doesn"t rust. It can take quite a lot of weight and is quite sturdy.
With that said, usually, stainless steel workbenches that are heavy duty in construction do cost a little bit more. So do yourself a big favor and do some medium term planning as to what range of activities you would be doing in your garage and try to fit the right workbench with your needs.
Keep in mind that you might want to buy a workbench with storage options if storage is part of the equation. A lot of consumers completely overlook this and they end up buying extra storage. That is wasted money when they could have bought a workbench with storage options built in.
In case you are like many, storage space in a house is at a premium.
